U3A stands for the University of the Third Age, which is a self-help organisation for people in their ‘third age’ and no longer in full time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly and social environment. The University of the Third Age originated in France and arrived in this country in 1982. Across the UK there are now over 342,000 members in well over 950 local U3As.
U3As offer a self-help style of adult education where members contribute their skills and expertise to one another, through a wide range of educational, cultural, recreational and social groups. Our Crewe and Nantwich U3A has around 1500 members and we run over 100 groups, covering a wide range of subjects and interests, meeting weekly, fortnightly or monthly plus a series of drop-in social and guest speaker events – our “Members’ Mingles”. We also organise a number of theatre visits, trips and short holiday breaks through the year.
